A bird's eye view on API development

Details

After a great double lecture in January we continue with another one! Again from Antwerp, this time we have Frederick Vanbrabant and (again!) Freek Van der Herten coming over. Fredericks talk about API development will make you a pro! Freek tells us all about monitoring uptime with Laravel.

As of 2017 we have some prizes to give away each meetup! :)

The lectures

A bird's eye view on API development
We all know how to develop an API right? You just churn out a bit of JSON and call it a day... In this talk we're going to dig just a bit deeper then that. How do I choose HTTP codes, when should I use what verb, how do I structure endpoints, and what is this HATEOAS thing?

After we've covered the basics, we'll move on to more advanced topics such as authentication, versioning, and custom headers.

Monitoring uptime with Laravel
Last year his company released a package called laravel-uptime-monitor. This powerful piece of software can check the health of hundreds of sites in a few seconds. Not only the uptime can be check but also if there's a valid SSL- certificate installed. Unlike the alternatives, the package is absolutely free no matter how many sites you wish to monitor.

In this talk Freek gives us an overview of the package. You'll also learn how to install it from scratch. After that we’ll walk through the code and discuss some tricks that we used to automatically test the package.

About the speakers

Frederick Vanbrabant:

Frederick is a less then 30 year old developer from Antwerp with a passion for API's and everything that surrounds them. He works as a Software Engineer at madewithlove (https://madewithlove.be/) and is co-organiser of PHP Antwerp (https://www.meetup.com/phpantwerp/).

About Freek Van der Herten:

Freek Van der Herten is a partner and developer at Spatie (https://spatie.be/), an Antwerp based company that specializes in creating Laravel apps. The company has an Open Source first mentality. Freek is the author of many packages that Spatie releases. According to GitHub awards (http://github-awards.com/users?utf8=%E2%9C%93&type=world&language=php) Spatie is in the top 10 of PHP developers worldwide.

After hours Freek writes about modern PHP and Laravel on his blog (https://murze.be/) and is a co-organizer of PHP User Group in Antwerp, Belgium (http://phpantwerp.be/). When not coding he's probably rehearsing with his kraut-rock band (https://jarenduren.bandcamp.com/).

About the location

This time we move to another inspiring location! The meetup will be held at CARE Internet Services (https://www.care.nl/) near the center of Eindhoven. CARE is located in an amazing building -as you will see when attending- at the edge of the city center, just around the corner of the Stadhuisplein. There is enough parking space in the streets around. For people coming by bus, the lines 7, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 318 & 407 all stop around the corner.

We all love pizza and drinks and CARE is taking care of that (no pun intended). Food will be served at about 18:00 hour. The lecture starts at approximately 19:00 o'clock.
